Urgency to Class

Parents and Students,

We are stressing the importance of getting to all assigned classes on time and not roaming the halls. Unfortunately, parents we are starting to see some of our students develop poor habits for getting to class on time. This includes all classes, including lunch and First Period. Over the next few weeks the administrative and behavioral team will be conducting multiple hall sweeps. If your student does not make it to class on time, and they do not have a pass, they will be assigned an after school detention. If they are in a second sweep they will be assigned a half day ISS, and if they are caught in a sweep a third time, they will receive a full day of ISS. Our goal is to have students in the classroom from the beginning of class until the end of class receiving instruction and being active in their education. You will be notified with an email and automated phone call detailing the consequences.

Hour of Code Event Feb. 2nd

We are excited to announce our districtwide Hour of Code Event on February 2, 2022!

We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works.

But only a fraction of us are learning how technology works. Only 51% of all high schools offer computer science.

That’s why our entire school district is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, on February 2, 2022. More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code. Our Hour of Code is making a statement that the Coatesville Area School District is ready to teach these foundational 21st-century skills. To continue bringing programming activities to your students, we want to make our Hour of Code event huge. We encourage you to speak with your children about this great opportunity. We are looking forward to sharing our students' engagement in this event on February 2, 2022.

This is a chance to change the future of education in Coatesville!

Assembly by Deputy District Attorney Mrs. Merion

Last week we had Mrs. Merion from the Chester County District Attorney's Office come and speak to the 8th and 9th grade students about a variety of subjects. She spoke about cyber bullying, cell phone safety, sexting, once you post something it never goes away, and the consequences that can occur if you break the law. It was very informative and insightful for the students.

MAP Testing for Math

As a reminder students this week in their Math classes will be taking the MAP winter Benchmark Assessments and next week they will take the Math Benchmark Assessments.

Below are a few commonly asked questions on the NWEA MAP testing website that answers questions about MAP testing that I find helpful.

1. What is MAP Growth and what does it measure?

Unlike paper-and-pencil tests, where all students are asked the same questions and spend a fixed amount of time taking the test, MAP Growth is a computer-adaptive test. That means every student gets a unique set of test questions based on responses to previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions get harder. If the student answers incorrectly, the questions get easier. By the end of the test, most students will have answered about half the questions correctly, as is common on adaptive tests. The purpose of MAP Growth is to determine what the student knows and is ready to learn next.

MAP Growth is designed to measure student achievement in the moment and growth over time.

MAP Growth can also track students’ individual growth over time, wherever they are starting from and regardless of the grade they are in. For instance, if a third-grader is actually reading like a fifth-grader, MAP Growth will be able to identify that. Or, if a fifth-grader is doing math like a third-grader, MAP Growth will identify that, too. Both things are incredibly important for a teacher to know so that they can plan instruction efficiently.

2. What is a RIT score?

When students finish their MAP Growth test, they receive a number called a RIT score for each area they are tested in: reading, language usage, math, or science. This score represents a student’s achievement level at any given moment and helps measure their academic growth over time. The RIT scale is a stable scale, like feet and inches, that accurately measures student performance, regardless of age, grades, or grade level. Like marking height on a growth chart and being able to see how tall a child is at various points in time, you can also see how much they have grown between tests.

Student Delivery of Food

Students and Parents,

This a reminder that students are not permitted to order food from local restaurants during school hours and have it delivered to school. If this should occur, we will hold the food and send it home with the students at the end of the day; Please remind your child that they should either pack a school lunch or eat our lunch that is provided to all students at no cost.
